FAQs About Bedspread Styles

Different bed styles are designed to hang from the bed in different ways, and to reflect different climates or seasons. Bedspreads should fit the shape of the bed and the overall style of the rooms décor.
- Q: What are the four main bedspread styles?
- A: The four most common bedspread styles are throws, mocks, gusset corner spreads and waterfalls. Out of those, throws are the most common bedspread style; they have rounded corners and are designed to lay loosely over the bed. Mock fitted bedspreads have closed corners which are sewn down to lay square at the corner, and to fit the bed in a tailored way. Gusset corner bedspreads have folded and tacked corners and are the most tailored bedspread styles. The corners are not quilted so that the corner fold lays extremely flat. A waterfall is a fitted throw, that has seams along the edge of the bed to ensure that the sides fall down flat and square at each side and at the foot.
- Q: What are the different bedspread weights?
- A: There are four basic bedspread weights: felt weight, 6-ounce, 9-ounce and hi-loft. Felt weight is the lightest blanket weight and the flattest bedspread. The most common weight for use in hotels, it is the easiest to put on a bed and smooth down. 6-ounce, also known as light fill, is a medium puff that offers a light warmth and gives the blanket a quilted look. 9-ounce filling is considered a luxury weight blanket; it is both warm and highly decorative. Hi-loft is 11 to 13 ounce weight and creates the maximum amount of puff in quilting.
